With more than 15 years of experience in opera both on and off the stage, Nathan DePoint is currently the Director of Artistic Operations at Austin Opera, a newly created position at the company. Partnering with the dynamic leadership of General Director and CEO Annie Burridge, he oversees every element of the company’s performances and alsodrives the implementation of Austin Opera’s new brand extension, Opera ATX. He joined Austin Opera in January 2017 as the Director of Operations and was tasked with the implementation of best practices and new processes during the company’s revitalization and to lay the groundwork for what would become Opera ATX.

He came to Austin Opera from Fort Worth Opera, where he was the first Director of Artistic Administration in its history. During his almost 10 years in Fort Worth, his responsibilities included casting and season planning, budgeting, artistic and creative team management, and new commissions and partnerships. He also served as Curator of the Frontiers initiative, an annual composition competition and new works showcase. One of his biggest successes in Fort Worth was producing the world premiere of JFK by David T. Little and Royce Vavrek; not only did it receive critical acclaim locally and nationally, but the production was revived in January 2018 at Opéra de Montréal. Other highlights in Fort Worth were commissions including A Wrinkle in Time (Larsen), and workshops of new work like Voir Dire (Peterson/Zencka), and many world and regional premieres.

He was selected for the inaugural class of Opera America’s Leadership Intensive in 2012, a program designed to identify and cultivate America’s next generation of opera leaders. He has served as a panelist for Opera America’s annual conference and as a judge for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Prior to his turn in administration, he was an opera singer, performing over 20 roles in the baritone repertory at opera houses across the United States. He received his Master of Music in Opera Performance from Wichita State University and his Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance from John Brown University.
